New Zealand has surged to the top of the Eisenhower Trophy after the second round
in Ireland on Friday morning (NZ time).
The team of Daniel Hillier, Denzel Ieremia and Kerry Mountcastle combined for a second-round total of 13 under par, moving them to 20 under at the halfway point of the world amateur men's teams tournament.
Hillier and Ieremia put in outstanding individual performances, with rounds of seven-under 65 and six-under 66 respectively, to put New Zealand one shot clear of Thailand, Ireland and Denmark.
The team score is calculated by taking the two best individual scores.
"I'm pretty shaken, to be honest," said Hillier after his round. "It was an awesome day.
"I didn't have any idea what the boys were doing in front of me, but every time I looked, they had their heads high and it really helped me kick on. It was a great team effort."
New Zealand's only win at the Eisenhower Trophy was when Michael Campbell, Stephen Scahill, Phil Tataurangi and Gr ant Moorhead lifted the trophy in Vancouver, Canada in 1992.
